Thursday, August 8, 2024:

Dear UNCSA Community,

Because of the adverse weather conditions, all High School orientation events for today have been canceled.

High School orientation will resume at noon tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 9, for students only.

The High School Parent Breakfast that was scheduled for Friday morning has been postponed until Homecoming: Family and Alumni Weekend, Oct. 17-20. Details will be forthcoming.

Also, any questions that High School Parents may have had during orientation will be covered during an extended High School Parent Coffee Talk scheduled for noon (12 p.m. EST) on Aug. 23, with High School Dean Martin Ferrell and members of our High School Life team.

Currently, UNCSA is open and operating under normal conditions. UNCSA officials continue to closely monitor the effects of Tropical Storm (TS) Debby and will make decisions regarding campus operations as needed. The safety of our students, faculty, staff and visitors remains our top priority.

We are aware that many of our High School students were unable to move in this morning because of TS Debby. High School students unable to move in today because of the weather will be accommodated. Please contact the Main Desk at the High School Residence Hall Connector Building at 336-770-3281 for late check-in procedures.

As of 10:17 a.m. our area is under a Flash Flood Warning, which is in effect until 4 p.m. today and includes a large portion of the Piedmont Triad (Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point). Some areas in the region could see six to nine inches of total rain. There is also the potential for isolated tornadoes.

We strongly encourage High School parents and students to review local weather and road conditions in order to make well-informed, safe choices about travel during the storm.

Work continues across campus to mitigate any effects, such as localized flooding, and to respond to any damage that may be caused by Debby. UNCSA Facilities Management, Student Affairs, and Police and Public Safety are available to assist incoming High School parents, guardians and students on campus.

UNCSA will share any further updates, if they become necessary, via campus email or UNCSA Alert (email, text message, phone).

Sincerely,

Laurel Donley
Vice Provost of Student Affairs

Headmaster and Dean of High School Academic Program

Wednesday, August 7, 2024:

Dear UNCSA Community,

UNCSA officials are closely monitoring and preparing for Tropical Storm (TS) Debby. Currently, UNCSA is open and operating under normal conditions, and High School move-in on Thursday will be proceeding as planned.

TS Debby, which made landfall in Florida Monday as a Category 1 hurricane, is back over the Atlantic where it is regaining strength and impacting the coast of the southeastern U.S. Debby is expected to make a second landfall on Thursday on the South Carolina coast.

The Winston-Salem area is under a flood watch until Friday at 9 p.m. For us, Debby is expected to be a heavy rain event with wind gusts around 30 mph and the possibility of isolated tornadoes. Thunderstorms could begin this afternoon.

UNCSA Facilities Services, Student Affairs, and Police and Public Safety are preparing the campus for potential flooding and high winds and are making plans to assist incoming High School parents, guardians and students with the rain. Now is a good time to review the university’s Adverse Weather Regulation, severe weather guidelines and safe shelter locations.

UNCSA will share any updates, if they become necessary, via campus email or UNCSA Alert (email, text message, phone).

Sincerely,

Tommy L. McMasters
Chief of Police

Emergency Management Coordinator
