A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute
Degree Programs
The A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute offers three distinct programs of study: a two-year
graduate training program (renewable for a third year) awarding the Master of Music
degree in Vocal Performance; a one-year Graduate Certificate in Vocal Performance;
and a one-year post-graduate advanced training program awarding the Professional Artist
Certificate.
Master of Music
The Master of Music in Vocal Performance degree program admits a select number of
qualified singers who demonstrate the potential for advanced study in opera. Highlights
of the graduate opera degree program:
- Guaranteed roles in fully-staged productions, scenes, touring/outreach programs
- Master classes and workshops with renowned visiting artist-teachers
- A course of study specifically designed to nurture professional growth:
- Advanced study in voice
- Weekly vocal/diction coaching with resident vocal coach
- Language and diction study
- Audition preparation
- Acting and movement work
- Freeing the body for effective performance
- Career enhancement strategies
- Opportunities to meet with and audition for regional professional companies
Singers admitted to the Institute’s graduate program are awarded full tuition/fees,
$2,000 towards the purchase of health insurance, a $1,000 travel stipend for auditions
and competition, collaborative pianist provided for lessons and recitals, plus a stipend
of $5,000 to help cover living expenses.
Graduate Certificate
The Graduate Certificate in Voice admits a select number of qualified singers who
demonstrate their potential and desire to pursue further study at the graduate level.
Highlights of the graduate certificate program degree program:
- Guaranteed roles in fully-staged productions, scenes, touring/outreach programs
- Master classes and workshops with renowned visiting artist-teachers
- A course of study specifically designed to nurture professional growth:
- Advanced study in voice

The Professional Artist Certificate (PAC) is a one year post-Masters program that
admits a select number of uniquely qualified singers who demonstrate exceptional potential
for success in a professional career. Highlights of the program:
- Guaranteed roles in fully-staged productions, scenes, touring and outreach programs
- Master classes and workshops with renowned visiting artists
- Two vocal/diction coachings per week with the resident principal coach
- Two musical coachings per month with music director
- Audition preparation
- Advanced language study
- Opportunities to meet with and audition for regional professional companies
Singers accepted into the Institute’s PAC program are awarded full tuition/fees, $2,000
towards the purchase of health insurance, $1,000 travel stipend for auditions and
competition, collaborative pianist provided for lessons and recitals and an $8,100
stipend to help cover living expenses.
