Dear UNCSA Campus,
We are deeply saddened to share the news of the unexpected passing of Hector Lopez, an integral member of our Dining Services staff and Aramark employee. He passed away at his home in Winston-Salem this week.
Hector had been a part of our Dining Services team for more than 12 years. He started in the Pickle Jar, and his services were soon requested in the Dining Hall. His dishes made at the recently named “Hector’s Home Cooking” station at the Chef’s Table have always been favorites.
Hector was a bright light in our Dining family. He was loved by everyone: faculty, staff and especially, students. He made it a priority to connect with them and anyone who dined in the Dining Hall. He approached his job with enthusiasm to give his very best to those he served, and it made a huge impact on all who knew him.
In his own words from 2020: “I never had kids; now I have 400+, and I love it. And again, it’s for you guys, it’s not me: That’s why I put my passion into this.” Hector’s selfless approach to prioritizing and taking care of our students as well as faculty and staff stands out as a shining example for all of us, and words cannot adequately express how much he will be missed.
I know that Hector’s passing is a shock for many of us. Students, if you need assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact our partner Uwill, which provides free, immediate access to teletherapy and crisis support 24/7/365, including during summer break.
Faculty and staff may access the state’s confidential Employee Assistance Program administered by ComPysch by calling 1-888-311-4237, or you may visit the Headspace Care app (formerly Ginger) online.
Please keep Hector’s family and friends in your thoughts during this difficult time. We will keep our community informed about any services or tributes that may be planned.
Sincerely,
Brian Cole
