International Travel Guidelines
All undergraduate and graduate students are required to have health insurance coverage for basic medical services. This policy also applies to students participating in a university-sponsored international project. This coverage can be obtained by enrolling in the health and evacuation insurance program.
Faculty and staff traveling internationally for official University business should also have health and evacuation insurance.
Exclusions
Students, faculty, or staff whose international travel is independent of the University are not subject to this guideline.
Risk Management Rationale
Accidents or sicknesses that occur while traveling internationally pose unique challenges. Participants may need to familiarize themselves with their host country's medical services and locations. Language barriers and different billing requirements may affect prompt medical services. In addition, serious injuries may require medical evacuation or repatriation services. To make the travel experience safer, the UNC General Administration adopted insurance guidelines for all UNC System-sponsored international programs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are students required to have health insurance while traveling abroad?
Is this just travel insurance?
No. International health and evacuation insurance is not the same as travel insurance. This type of insurance provides travelers with direct access to medical professionals and services and limited evacuation logistics.
If applicable, travel insurance covers issues with a traveler's luggage, flights, and accommodations.
Who is required to enroll in international health and evacuation insurance?
Students traveling abroad for university-sponsored business must enroll. Examples of university-sponsored activities include conferences, educational projects, performance opportunities, competitions, practicum/internships, apprenticeships, and festivals.
Do I have to use the school's insurance, or can I use my current health insurance, which has some international coverage, or purchase my own?
UNCSA students traveling internationally for university-sponsored business must enroll in and use the affiliated international health and evacuation insurance.
Students whose international travel is independent of the University are not subject to this policy.
How much does this insurance cost?
How do I enroll in the international health and evacuation insurance program?
Register for insurance by submitting an enrollment form. The form will be routed to the administrator of your Art School (students) or *department (faculty and staff) for processing and payment.
Is getting insurance for a spouse/partner or family member who is also going on the trip possible?
Please consult with your department administrator about this request. If approved, you must fill out the enrollment form for each traveler. Please note that the rate for accompanying family members will be higher than for UNCSA faculty, staff, or students.
How soon can the insurance become effective?
Once a properly completed health and evacuation insurance enrollment form is submitted and payment received, insurance coverage can be implemented within 73 hours (or three weekdays). However, it is preferred that forms and payments be submitted at least two weeks before the traveler’s departure date. This allows time to process the application and distribute the insurance ID card.
Once I enroll in the University's travel abroad insurance program, what verification will I receive that my coverage is active?
Participants will receive a welcome email with directions on how to set up an online account and download the ID card. The ID card will provide a member number and claims information. It should be carried with you during international travel.
