The School of Drama hits the ground running with its first production of the performance season, “Fefu
& Her Friends.” Undergraduate student Darah Barenholtz directs the Obie-winning 1977
play by prolific Cuban American playwright María Irnene Fornés as her senior thesis.
Despite being written in the mid 70s – the thick of the second wave feminist movement
– this deep dive into gender dynamics takes place in 1935, when eight women meet at
Fefu’s home to plan a fundraiser. The play asks its audience to invest in these women
as they confront the bounds of friendship and test the conditionality of affection.
