Overview

The luminous voice of Emily Newton, soprano, accompanied by pianist Joshua Rupley will set your heart on fire. Praised for her “vocal elegance” (Süddeutsche Zeitung), the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute alumna presents music that illuminates the struggle between love and freedom — the emotional ties that connect us to someone or something we deeply love and, in the broader artistic sphere, how artists are held captive by their art form.

The evening’s repertoire includes Amy Beach’s “Four Songs,” with one line in a poem by her husband, Dr. Henry Beach, serving as the inspiration for the program’s evocative title: “Captive Heart.” These rare Romantic gems will capture your imagination. Copland’s setting of “Poems of Emily Dickinson” and songs and arias by Wagner and Verdi all sing, in some way, of “the ties that bind.”
