Wendy Emerson named vice chancellor for finance and administration at UNCSA

UNCSA Chancellor Brian Cole has announced that Wendy Emerson will become the permanent vice chancellor for finance and administration, effective immediately. Her appointment was approved April 7 by the UNCSA Board of Trustees.

Emerson has served as interim vice chancellor for finance and administration since August 2022. Previously at UNCSA, she served as the associate vice chancellor since May 2020. With Emerson’s new appointment, the university will now search for the next associate vice chancellor for finance.

As vice chancellor, Emerson will be responsible for the oversight of the Division of Financial Services, which includes Budgeting, Financial Systems, Purchasing and Auxiliary Services, and the Controller’s Office. She is also responsible for oversight of the departments of Facilities Management, Information Technology (IT), and Police & Public Safety.

“I am highly confident that Wendy will continue to do an excellent job of leading and managing the university’s financial resources as well as the other departments that fall under her purview,” Chancellor Cole said. “All of these departments are critical to the day-to-day functioning and operations of our university, ensuring that we are able to achieve our mission of training the next generation of artists.

“In her time as interim, Wendy has advanced the Fiscal Sustainability component of UNCSA Forward, under our strategic plan’s Institutional Sustainability pillar, by implementing a new Financial Data Portal,” Cole continued. “Wendy also designed and led our first annual budget information session.”

Prior to UNCSA, Emerson spent 12 years as vice president for business services/chief financial officer and two years as dean of financial services at Forsyth Technical Community College. Before Forsyth Tech, she worked as an assistant state auditor in the North Carolina Office of the State Auditor in Winston-Salem for a decade, performing financial audits for state universities and community colleges, and fiscal control audits for clerks of Superior Court.

Recently, Emerson was accepted into the UNC Executive Leadership Institute program and will be a member of the 2023-24 cohort. Other honors include: nominee for CFO of the year in the Triad Business Journal, in 2011; a recipient of the “Women of Vision” award from the YWCA of Winston-Salem, in 2010; a member of Leadership Winston-Salem, in 2009-10; and member of the Center for Creative Leadership program, in 2010-11.

Emerson received her Master of Science in accounting and her Bachelor of Science in business administration, both from Appalachian State University in Boone.
