Transfer Information

Transfer Information

Undergraduate transfer students will be placed according to ability and experience at the discretion of the appropriate dean and faculty following review of prior courses and interviews with faculty members. Where applicable, placement tests will be administered, and appropriate advanced institutional credit is awarded. A transfer student must be enrolled for a minimum of two years and complete no less than 50% of their required program credits at UNCSA to qualify for the Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music, or Undergraduate Arts Certificate.

On This Page

Credit for liberal arts courses in which the student has earned at least a “C” at another accredited college, and which are equivalent to specific UNCSA courses, will be transferred to the UNCSA record during the first semester of enrollment. Students must be in good standing to transfer additional coursework. Pre-approval from the appropriate dean is required to register for courses at another campus. Only equivalent courses with a grade of "C" or better may transfer into UNCSA. Transfer courses at the undergraduate level do not impact the UNCSA GPA. Students should review the transfer information listed in the Division of Liberal Arts section of the undergraduate bulletin.

Do you have AP or IB test score reports, or do you have potential transfer credit from another college or university? Make sure that you have sent final official copies of all high school and college transcripts, and IB test scores to the Admissions Office. Advanced Placement (AP) test score reports may be sent to the Admissions Office electronically.

Transfer Admissions Applicants

UNCSA accepts transfer applications from undergraduate students in each of our five conservatories. Undergraduate students who wish to transfer from other institutions of higher education must comply with UNCSA’s audition and entrance requirements.

Academic college courses carrying a grade of “C” or better from an accredited college which are equivalent to specific UNCSA academic courses, may be transferred to the UNCSA record by the Division of Liberal Arts. Transfer or advanced placement credits for liberal arts classes taken at another institution are subject to the general policies of the Division of Liberal Arts.

Please see the admission requirements for your specific conservatory or contact your Admissions Counselor for more information. International students must follow additional guidelines for international admissions.

Transcripts

College transfer students should submit official transcripts from all colleges attended. If the transcript does not include coursework in which you are currently enrolled, please submit the courses in progress as a separate document. All transfer applicants that do not hold a bachelor’s degree or higher must also submit official High School transcripts. Please check the admissions criteria for your specific conservatory for GPA and Academic Requirements.

Test Scores

SAT and ACT scores are waived for college transfer students who are age 21 or older and/or have earned 24 or more academic credit hours at the time of application.

Transfer Credit Policy for Currently Enrolled Students

The UNCSA Division of Liberal Arts accepts transfer credit in the liberal arts and sciences from accredited colleges and community colleges in the U.S. and, in certain cases, from abroad. The course content must correspond to UNCSA Division of Liberal Arts requirements, and the student must earn a minimum grade of “C.”
  • UNCSA recognizes the Joint Transfer Articulation Agreement with the North Carolina Community Colleges; however, the student must still complete all UNCSA graduation requirements for the Bachelor of Fine Arts or Bachelor of Music degree.
  • We do not accept remedial courses; business courses; many computer courses; arts courses; or other professional courses of any kind for Liberal Arts credit.
  • Regardless of the number of transfer credits awarded, most undergraduate students must take at least one course in residence in Liberal Arts at UNCSA.
  • Currently enrolled students cannot transfer in college credits if their Liberal Arts GPA is below 2.0.
  • Currently enrolled students who wish to fulfill their Liberal Arts requirements with courses from another college must submit a Transfer Request Form to the Assistant Dean before enrolling at another institution.

Use the course descriptions from the UNCSA Bulletin as general guidelines and match them as closely as possible to a course description of the college you have attended or are currently attending. Please bring your former college Bulletin or copies of course descriptions with you upon enrollment, as this will greatly facilitate our process. All preliminary responses via phone, fax, and e-mail are unofficial until you are registered, and we have all final transcripts.

Transfer Credit Options

A) NC Comprehensive Articulation Agreement

As a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina, UNCSA fully supports and adheres to the provisions of the North Carolina Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA). Students that successfully complete one of the outlined CAA provisions will have their UNCSA general education requirements satisfied. Students may be required to take additional coursework in the undergraduate academic program required by the major for graduation. For more information regarding the CAA and its provisions, please access the CAA manual. College students who wish to transfer from other institutions of higher education must comply with the School’s audition and entrance requirements.

College courses carrying a grade of “C” or better may be considered for transfer credit.

If a student from a North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) college believes UNC School of the Arts has not honored the terms of the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA), the student may invoke the CAA Transfer Credit Appeal Procedure.

B) Advanced Placement Tests, International Baccalaureate (I.B.) Tests

Undergraduate students may qualify for credit through placement tests. A student who participated in the Advanced Placement® (AP) Program of the College Board may have their record considered for credit in the college program when a score of three (3) or above has been achieved on an Advanced Placement exam. C) College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

College Level Examination Program® (CLEP) test scores in areas that correspond to courses in the UNCSA curriculum also may be presented for evaluation for possible credit. Credit for CLEP tests is available only to first year students or students with sophomore standing and is considered inappropriate for more advanced students. UNCSA will only consider credit for such tests that have been completed prior to the beginning of the junior year.

D) Cambridge International Certificate

Cambridge International Certificate® AS Level, A Level, or AICE Level examinations at scores of C’s or higher will be awarded course credit. UNCSA recognizes Cambridge qualifications for admission, as well as awards credit and advanced standing placement. An official Cambridge International transcript is required to credit to be awarded.

You can use the Grade Transcript Service to send your Cambridge International AS & A Level exam grades to your chosen institution(s) if they need a copy of your official exam grades to make credit by exam, placement or other decisions that depend on the exam grades. Institutions will receive your transcript within 14 days of your request. For more information, please visit the Cambridge website.

E) UNC Common Course Numbering System

The UNC System created a Common Numbering System to ease transfer across the 16 public UNC System universities, as well as the School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM). If you used the CNS to plan your transfer, but your official credit evaluation is not showing as you expected, you can initiate the UNC CNS Transfer Credit Appeal Procedure by clicking here.
