Performance Overview
The name of this concert, “From Ancient Wells,” suggests that the music dips into venerable traditions for inspiration — whether in form, sonic palette, or evocations of folk music.
In this faculty recital, violin/piano duo Dmitri Shteinberg and Kevin Lawrence present works that recall ancient Greek myths, as does Karol Szymanowski’s “Mythes,” for example; or display ethnic colors, like the fiery Hungarian/Roma rhythms of Bartók’s Second Rhapsody; or reimagine what has gone before, like Wynton Marsalis’s “Fiddle Dance Suite,” in which, according to Marsalis himself, he wanted “to faithfully weave a multitude of musical traditions together, creating pieces that are not wholly jazz nor classical, but something entirely new.”
