George Burnette

George Burnette was appointed by Chancellor John Mauceri as the Chief Operating Officer for NCSA effective July 1, 2006.  Mr. Burnette was an Associate Vice President for Finance for the 16-campus University of North Carolina.  He was responsible for providing accounting and financial reporting guidance to the schools, monitoring the corrective actions taken by the schools for all audit findings and reporting on the status of the corrective actions to the President and the UNC Board of Governors (BOG), staffing the BOG Audit Committee, developing and preparing the systemwide Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) report, reviewing new accounting standards promulgated by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), develop systemwide implementation plans and proposals for new accounting standards, and monitoring foundation compliance with Board of Governors’ reporting requirements.  Mr. Burnette also functioned in the role of liaison to the North Carolina Office of the State Auditor and the North Carolina Office of the State Controller for the Office of the President.

Prior to joining UNC in 1996, Mr. Burnette was the Research and Compliance Manager at the North Carolina Office of the State Controller (OSC) for three years and was on staff at the North Carolina State Auditor’s Office for fourteen years prior to joining the OSC. 

Mr. Burnette is a graduate of North Carolina State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degrees in both Accounting and Business Management in 1979.  He is a certified public accountant licensed in North Carolina and holds the Certified Government Financial Manager professional certification from the Association of Government Accountants.  He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, National Association of College and University Business Officers, Southern Association of College and University Business Officers, and the Association of College and University Auditors.

Burnette and his wife, Susan, have two children.
